I Shop Amazon for a Living, and These Are the 7 Things I'm Buying From Its New Sustainable Collection

Despite my job as a shopping reporter where I spend eight hours a day poring over products and stores, sourcing sustainable options for coverage and my personal shopping cart is a challenge. While there are a growing number of eco-friendly brands, much of the jargon, the certifications, and the price points feel intimidating, which is why I'm delighted about this new and accessible brand.

Amazon launched its first-ever line devoted to sustainability, and it includes clothing, home goods, household items, and beauty products all under $80. Everything from the affordable collection, dubbed Amazon Aware, is carbon neutral, eco-friendly, and designed to last. And every item meets various sustainability standards for its particular category and Amazon's Climate Friendly program. I've already added a number of items to my cart, including basics like T-shirts, sheet sets, and sleepwear.

An easy way to practice sustainable shopping—no matter the brand or retailer—is simply to buy less by investing in pieces that will hold up over time, and that's exactly what the designers intended for the clothing and home assortment. Seemingly small details, like the bedding's thread count and material choice, ensure they last and get softer over time. And there are no trendy items featured. These basics and classic styles all come in timeless colors, ensuring they're stylish now and for years to come.

The materials are eco-friendly, too. Half of the fibers used to make the line's jeans are made from recycled materials, the organic cotton that's used meets the Organic Content Standard (OCS), and much of the assortment has earned the Higg Index Materials seal, which confirms that the manufacturing standards are kind to the earth. The clothing packaging features recycled materials, while the bedding all comes in reusable cotton totes.

I'm especially excited to snag the cotton sheets and duvet covers, which will keep me cool at night. As a hot sleeper, I'm always looking for materials made from breathable, natural materials, and it's even better that they're organic. And the same goes for the soft sleepwear pieces. While there are tons of cooling pajamas on the market, these lightweight cotton sleepwear tops and short bottoms are a much better fit for my budget.

Besides fashion and home, Amazon Aware offers sustainably made beauty products that come in recyclable aluminum bottles and glass jars. Shoppers can stock up on skincare and shower products formulated with safe ingredients that meet standards set by the Environmental Working Group. There are everyday household items, too, including paper towels and napkins made from recycled paper.
