Embarking on a sustainable lifestyle can feel like a huge undertaking. Changing one's habits isn't something that happens overnight, and it certainly can't be achieved just by making a few eco-conscious household swaps—not to mention, the eco-friendly space is always evolving.

If you feel intimidated by the green lifestyle, don't be: Anyone can help the environment at any time. No effort is too small. Since understanding how to shop sustainably is such a hefty topic, we enlisted the help of Leone Baron, sustainability expert and head of community at My Climate Journey Collective, and Graham Hill, founder and CEO of The Carbonauts. They'll break down eco terms, explain why we should all be striving for sustainability, and highlight popular certifications consumers are typically presented with when making decisions.

Why should we strive for sustainability?

It's a term that gets thrown around often, making it hard to really digest and comprehend. To remedy this, focus on what being sustainable can do.

"A primary benefit of living a more sustainable lifestyle is the peace of mind that comes with knowing what you're supporting with your wallet—ultimately, we're voting with our money, and each dollar you spend is a sign of endorsement," says Baron. "Sustainable products are often 'cleaner,' which can be better for your health and the environment."

Where to shop for sustainable items

You might not know this, but there are several online sites that carry carbon neutral products, and Amazon is one of them. But what is carbon neutral?

"Carbon-neutral or net-zero carbon companies and products are those that have found a way to mitigate the carbon footprint of their value chains or specific goods," explains Hill. "They can achieve this by doing a combination of things such as shifting to renewable power, upgrading their fleets to electric vehicles, and changing their supply chains."

Since Amazon announced its climate-friendly pledge (we'll dive into that below), we used Baron and Hill's knowledge to guide us as we searched for the best bets, including those that are part of the carbon-neutral Amazon Aware storefront.

Sustainable Amazon Fashion and Home Finds

What is the Amazon Aware storefront?

The Amazon Aware section is a shopping hub for people looking to discover smarter, more sustainable products. It includes everyday essentials like vegan beauty products, clothing made with sustainable materials, and even reusable household goods. All items sold in the storefront are third-party certified to be carbon neutral. And the third-party looks at everything from emissions to distribution in their evaluation methods before giving a stamp of approval.

What is Amazon's climate friendly pledge?

Amazon launched its Climate Pledge Friendly program to help shoppers easily discover sustainable products online. There are currently over 300,000 items sold with a green logo on the product page that helps people understand how a product is helping the environment. "This is a remarkably huge undertaking by the world's biggest retailer, and signals that consumers really care about this stuff," adds Hill.

People lead busy lives and don't have the time to research individual products. Identifying the green logo is quick and easy. "As a massive, global retailer, Amazon has a lot of power to influence things like manufacturing, supply chains, marketing, and the way individuals shop. Their potential to create cultural shifts is enormous."

If you're ready to make your shopping a little more Earthy-friendly, let's explore eight stylish and sustainable options on Amazon.

Amazon Aware Moisturizer

Face moisturizer is a repeat item; it's something you'll buy often. Not only is this everyday, creamy moisturizer made with avocado oil, skin-soothing squalane, sunflower seed oil, and cocoa butter, but it's vegan and is a carbon-neutral product. One shopper with eczema and rosacea was pleasantly surprised by how well this worked for her. "It's very hard for me to find a cream that is moisturizing enough for my very dry skin. This moisturizes just as well as the ceramide creams that I have."

Force of Nature Multi-Purpose Cleaner Kit

This household cleaner kit is a favorite non-toxic disinfectant (the company uses a hypochlorous acid as the disinfectant, which is free of harmful, gas-emitting VOCs, dyes, and fragrances), and because it uses capsules, it's also sustainable and planet-friendly. Pop a new capsule into the activator system, push a button, and in minutes your spray is ready to use. No more buying replacement bottles.

This effort effectively reduces plastic waste by 97 percent, which is hugely impactful because 11 million metric tons of plastic pollution go into the ocean each year. "Low-impact products are ones that don't negatively affect the environment or society in which they're made, manufactured, transported, consumed or disposed of," explains Leone.

Burt's Bees Baby Pajamas

Every kid needs pajamas, but not all jammies are cut from the same cloth. "Burt's Bees have been very transparent about their journey to become a more environmentally-friendly brand, focusing heavily on their water footprint," says Leone. This super-soft two-piece pajama set has over 15,000 five-star ratings, is offered in dozens of different print and color combinations, and goes from 12T up to 14Y.

The kitchen is an area of the home that generates a ton of waste, and paper towels are a large factor. Enter: reusable cleansing cloths. These are not your mom's dish towels. This pack comes with eight cleaning cloths (13 inches by 15 inches) that can be tossed into the washing machine (cold cycle, anyone?) after each use. They're thin and resemble traditional paper towels.

One shopper shared a smart way to keep these top of mind. "They are thin, so they dry pretty fast after you use them. I've put them right next to the paper towels in my kitchen. My goal is to use them as much as possible and avoid paper towels whenever I can."

It's free of the heavy-hitters like parabens and fragrance, but it's also free of phenoxyethanol (a controversial irritant) and butylated hydroxytoluene (a potential endocrine disruptor). Now onto the planet. As part of Amazon's pledge, Compact by Design has certified that Ilia "products remove excess air and water, which reduces the carbon footprint of shipping and packaging."

Kitchen products are often one of the many items that are confusing to buy. It's a hard aisle to navigate because so many brands use greenwashing language to appear eco, when in fact, their practices and ingredients are questionable. This everyday dish soap does none of that—it's free of harmful preservatives and offers eco-friendly refills to reduce plastic. It's certified by Ecologo, which ensures that "products meet standards that can reduce the environmental impact of one or more stages of the product life cycle." It also comes in three light scents, including coriander and olive, green apple and basil, and shopper-favorite grapefruit.

Amazon Basics Microfiber Sheet Set

The set comes in 28 prints and colors and is certified by Oeko-Tex Standard, which ensures that "products are tested for harmful substances and made in safer workplaces with reduced environmental impacts."

It's made with certified organic cotton and is certified carbon neutral by ClimatePartner. The dress is available in six stylish colors and can be dressed up or down for work or brunch.
